DESCRIPTION: The causal agent here is a midge with young galls conical above and more rounded on the lower lside. In summer a woody cylindrical to oval gall arises from the upper cones and gives the appearance of an egg in an egg-cup. Later in the summer this extra gall falls to the ground with a single yellow larva still inside. What is left behind is a structure similar to a small volcano (as shown above). In the fallen gall the larva will pupate and emerge as an adult the following spring. DISTRIBUTION: Scattered through the south of the UK but not common in any one area. HABITAT: On both surfaces of Lime leaves.
